China retail November 2024: Market up 27.4%, Jetour, Leapmotor, Xpeng, Deepal, Xiaomi and Bestune among record breakers

Xiaomi SU7 sales keep improving month after month, now above 23,000.

Retail sales are in for China, and it’s a bumper month, up 27.4% year-on-year to a record 2,388,475 for the models included in this report. This means the year-to-date volume is now up 8.3% to 19,892,401. BSCB is the only non-Chinese medium to cover both wholesales (ex-factory shipments) and retail sales data for China so you can get the most complete picture of the largest new car market in the world. Retail sales tend to give a more authentic view of the market as they roughly correspond to registrations by end-customers. This way, they are more difficult to boost with exports, as is sometimes the case for wholesales. Note imports, pickups and medium to heavy commercials are not included in this dataset, but it sometimes includes a more detailed split by model variant.

The BYD Seagull is up to over 55,000 sales in November.

BYD (+85.7%) continues to clearly dominate the brands charts, almost doubling its year-ago volume which is an exceptional performance given the scale of its sales. BYD has now passed 3 million cumulated units after 11 months. However in November the brand doesn’t break its volume record for once, receding below the 400,000 sales mark. BYD is once again lifted by its impressive number of new models, such as the Qin L, Seal 06 and 07, Sealion 05 and 07, Song L and Yuan UP. The Destroyer 05 (+215.3%), Han (+92.8%), Tang (+77.9%) and Seagull (+50%) also shoot up. Although in positive (+9.8%), Volkswagen loses share year-on-year again and its YTD total is off -8.9%. Some models still perform well, such as the Tayron (+92.9%), Tharu (+61.8%), Teramont (+46.1%), Passat (+45%), ID.4 X (+42.2%), Tiguan L (+29.3%) and Magotan (+24.6%).

Jetour approaches the 40,000 monthly sales mark

Toyota (+8.1%) lodges a similarly lukewarm result but manages to hold on to the third spot for now. Geely (+36.8%) is at its highest since January 2022, and that is not including Galaxy models which reach a record 30,555 units this month. Wuling (+59.5%) and Chery (+56.1%) surge while Changan (+18.7%) is more muted. Tesla (+12.9%) trails the market but scores its highest volume so far this year. Mediocre results for Honda (-31%), BMW (-16.2%), Nissan (-16.4%) and Audi (-3.3%). Li Auto (+20.7%) drops outside the Top 10 but stays above the 50,000 monthly units threshold. Buick (-21.3%) and Haval (-2.1%) are in bad shape whereas Hongqi (+20.4%) impresses.

Deepal hits a new monthly record at over 25,000 sales.

Once again there’s a whole raft of (Chinese) carmakers simply reaching an all-time high volume. Jetour (+78.7%) does so for the 4th consecutive month and is getting very close to 40,000 sales, Leapmotor (+117.5%) smashes its record by almost 5,000 units to surpass 37,000 for its 5th straight high, Galaxy is now above 30,000 units, Xpeng (+48.9%) breaks its best by almost 8,000 sales, Deepal (+87.8%) is up by over 6,000 sales, with Zeekr (+153.3%), newcomer Xiaomi and Bestune (+171.8%) also reaching new heights in the remainder of the Top 30. Meanwhile AITO (+66.2%) and Lynk & Co (+89.7%) surge ahead. Further down the charts, newcomers Luxeed (#42) and Fang Cheng Bao (#50) also hit personal bests.

The Bestune Xiaoma single handedly pushed the brand to a record high.

Now looking at the models charts, the BYD Seagull (+50%) manages a 4th straight win and breaks its volume record to lift it to over 55,000 units. The Seagull however remains #3 in the year-to-date order. The Tesla Model Y is back up five spots on October to #2, a ranking it also holds year-to-date with an unsurmountable gap with the BYD Qin Plus (+25.6%) down to #5 for the month. The Wuling Hongguang Mini EV (+80.7%) confirms its resurgence at #3 vs. #8 year-to-date. The BYD Song Plus (+25.9%), Seal 06 (new) and Qin L (new) make it 5 BYD models in the Top 7. It’s a small uptick for former leader the VW Lavida (+8.8%) up one spot on October to #8 and still the brand’s best-seller in China. The Nissan Sylphy (-21.6%) is in freefall at #9 vs. #5 so far this year and #3 over the Full Year 2023. Closing out the Top 10, the Tesla Model 3 (+87.9%) records its highest monthly volume since September 2022. The BYD Han, Geely Xingyue L, Li L6 and Xiaomi SU7 break records.
